First Landing State Park is accepting applications for the Housekeeping Ranger position.
Job Summary:
The Housekeeping Ranger supports the operations and cleanliness of Virginia State Park facilities by cleaning cabins, restrooms, campground bathhouses, museums, and other park structures. This position also performs the light maintenance and cleaning tasks necessary to operate state park facilities and may be required to perform other related duties during emergencies or on a non-recurrent basis.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Periodically works independently with minimal supervision and demonstrates initiative and reliability in completing tasks on time.
- Perform timely turnover of overnight facilities before guest check-in.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and other park facilities; restock supplies as needed.
- Operate and maintain hand tools and cleaning equipment (e.g., hammers, saws, pruners, mops, brooms).
- Assisting with inventory of linens, cabin and yurt supplies to prepare for incoming guests.
- Conduct light maintenance and cleaning tasks necessary for smooth park operations.
- Provide courteous assistance to park visitors, answer questions, and ensure a positive guest experience.
- Support additional related duties as assigned by supervisors.
- Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid Driver’s license.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings; hours may vary seasonally.
- Capable of performing manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions, including frequent walking, bending, standing, and lifting up to 20 lbs. unassisted.
Minimum Qualifications:
- General knowledge of proper cleaning techniques and attention to detail.
- Experience or training in housekeeping, public relations, and basic building/grounds maintenance.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with staff and park guests.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
