Machicomoco State Park is accepting applications for a Seasonal Maintenance Ranger position.
Job Summary:
This position is primarily responsible for routine cleaning and maintenance of restrooms, facilities, grounds, trails, and occasionally with various special projects as needed.
This position is limited to 700 hours during the wage fiscal year (May 1 - April 30) and is seasonal with no guarantee of employment beyond 700 hours.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will be primarily responsible for, but not limited to:
- Routine restroom cleaning, yurt cleaning, stocking supplies, trash pickup, and trail clean up, mowing/weed eating, and light facility maintenance.
- Operating a variety of hand tools and cleaning tools to include, but not limited to, hammers; hand saws; hand pruners; loppers; shovels; mops, brooms, dusters, etc.
- Operating power tools may include, but not limited to, a weed eater, pressure washer, blower, circular saw; reciprocating saw; drills of various types; vacuum cleaners; operating specialized equipment including mowers.
- Performing routine maintenance on all equipment used.
- Interacting with the public to include answering questions and providing information.
- Must possess a valid state Driver’s License.
- Must be willing to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs., hike trails of varying surfaces, and be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience working with basic hand and power tools.
- Experience cleaning and maintaining restrooms and/or facilities.
- Experience operating landscape equipment.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to follow directions/procedures, interact positively with staff/volunteers/visitors, and provide high quality results on assigned tasks.
- Experience in customer service.
Additional Considerations:
- Previous park or similar field experience.
- Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations related to the storage and use of cleaning chemicals.
- Experience with small engine repairs.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
