DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.

Generally applications must be made through the RMS (electronic state application). We will, however, accept paper applications for some state park slots. Be sure to refer to the individual recruitment for specific requirements.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.

​Kiptopeke State Park is accepting applications for a Retail Manager position.

Job Summary:

Self-motivated and outgoing individual needed to manage the successful operation of the camp store and visitor center under the supervision of the Assistant Park Manager.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • ​​Overseeing daily operations of the camp store; ensuring a welcoming atmosphere and smooth functioning of all activities.
  • Managing and motivating a small team of staff; providing training and fostering a positive work environment.
  • Delivering exceptional customer service, including addressing customer inquiries and concerns and creating a memorable shopping experience for every visitor.
  • Accurately inputting, updating, and managing data within the point of sales system.
  • Preparing, processing, and managing merchandise orders efficiently following state procurement guidelines.
  • Ability to work various shifts, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • ​​Excellent organizational and records management skills, including attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and data integrity.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service to internal and external individuals.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently to complete tasks with little to no supervision, as well as being a cooperative contributor within a team-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with business, computer, and retail services related practices and procedures.
  • Experience working in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Must be comfortable with heavy use of computers and various software applications, including proficiency in navigating computer systems, data entry, and using office software.
  • Experience consistently meeting deadlines and prioritizing daily duties while demonstrating flexibility in addressing unexpected, urgent assignments.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in person, on the telephone, in writing, and via electronic methods.
  • Ability to apply math calculations and assist in revenue reconciliation.

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience providing administrative support and knowledge of the park.
  • Prior knowledge and experience in retail management and cash management procedures; and knowledge of state procurement policies.

Special Instructions:

  • Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
  • Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
  • Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
  • Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

  • Free parking or admission to all Virginia State Parks.
  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people. 
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
