Natural Bridge State Park is accepting applications for a Sustainability Ranger position.
Job Summary:
This position supports the park’s sustainability initiatives by managing waste diversion programs, including recycling and composting operations. Responsibilities include sorting materials and ensuring proper handling and disposal practices. Maintains accurate records of recycling and compost volumes, tracks program performance, and assists with reporting to support environmental goals. Help educate staff and visitors on sustainable practices while contributing to the preservation of the park’s natural resources through efficient and responsible waste management.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee recycling and composting systems across the park, including collection, transport, and proper sorting of materials
- Keep accurate records of recycling and compost volumes, contamination rates, and disposal data for reporting and program evaluation
- Conduct routine checks of waste and recycling stations to ensure cleanliness, proper signage, and adequate supplies
- Assist with implementing new sustainability initiatives or improving existing waste reduction programs
- Follow all safety, environmental, and regulatory guidelines related to waste handling and sustainability operations
- Janitorial duties to include cleaning public bathrooms and common areas.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, sorting materials, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Basic organizational and recordkeeping skills, including the ability to track data accurately
- Ability to follow safety procedures and proper waste-handling guidelines
- Availability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to the Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
