DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.

Generally applications must be made through the RMS (electronic state application). We will, however, accept paper applications for some state park slots. Be sure to refer to the individual recruitment for specific requirements.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.

New River Trail State Park is accepting applications for the Maintenance Ranger Lead position at the Foster Falls location. 

Job Summary:

This skilled position supports the operation of the park through a range of duties including, but not limited to, performing and leading groundskeeper work which can include, but not
be limited to mowing, weed eating, leaf removal, landscape work, trash pickup around the grounds and roadside, etc. This level of employee has proven knowledge and will assist with minor equipment maintenance and equipment upkeep. The position is also responsible for the occasional cleaning of buildings and restrooms within State Park facilities. This position will assist more skilled trades technicians with repairs as needed, which may include, but are not limited to, carpentry and plumbing issues. They may also be tasked with performing minor repairs by themselves without direct supervision. Other duties outside the scope of this description may be assigned to be completed by a Trades Technician II employee if it helps complete the overall mission of Virginia State Parks. Questions should be referred to a higher level, and they work under immediate supervision with detailed verbal and written instructions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform and supervise janitorial duties, including cleaning park buildings.
  • Perform and supervise facility and grounds maintenance, including but not limited to mowing grass, weed eating, and trash and litter removal.
  • Operate equipment such as tractors
  • Assist with facility inventory organization and provide accurate information for ordering parts and supplies.
  • Assist with vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Perform skilled facility repairs and skilled equipment repairs (small engine, diagnostic services, and provide support for trail/volunteer projects, independent project designs, and execution.
  • Availability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Ability to be a leader and set an example for lower-level staff positions in performance of work duties.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds unassisted and work in outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to drive maintenance vehicles and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to operate and perform minor maintenance on landscaping equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, and blowers.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Must be able to follow verbal or written instructions.
  • Must have prior understanding of and be able to participate in verbal or written training that is required by OSHA or VOSH regulations or equipment-specific training for the proper use and daily maintenance of equipment.

  Additional Considerations:

  • Knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry is not necessary but preferred

Special Instructions:

  • Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
  • Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
  • Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
  • Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.
