DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.

Generally applications must be made through the RMS (electronic state application). We will, however, accept paper applications for some state park slots. Be sure to refer to the individual recruitment for specific requirements.

Pocahontas State Park is accepting applications for the ​Contact Ranger​ position. 

Job Summary: 

Pocahontas State Park, located in Chesterfield County, Virginia, is looking for a self-motivated and outgoing individual to provide optimal customer service with a friendly, professional, and courteous attitude. Contact Rangers are essential to meet the demands brought on by park visitation and the completion of many customer service duties. The position is the first point of contact to meet and greet park visitors, collect user fees, perform campground and cabin registration, general administrative tasks, and more.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • ​Provide coverage at the Contact Station, and other retail locations, as needed.
  • Provide high-quality customer service and accurate, detailed information on state parks, fees, rules and regulations, directions, pricing, annual passes, trail information, park interpretive programs, and local area attractions to park visitors.
  • Collect appropriate fees, sell merchandise, and register overnight and day-use rentals using a computer point of sale system.
  • Responsible for reconciling revenue for registers.
  • Perform administrative duties such as answering calls, composing arrival information for guests, copying, filing, and inventory, and other duties as assigned.
  • Perform daily cleaning duties to ensure contact station upkeep. 
  • Position requires working various shifts of up to 8 hours a day including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.   
  • Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day are mandatory workdays. 
  • Required to attend mandatory paid trainings. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated experience delivering high-quality customer service in a fast-paced, visitor-focused environment.
  • Proven experience working in a professional park setting, engaging positively with park visitors and collaborating with team members. 
  • Skilled in operating point-of-sale systems, accurately processing transactions, making change, and reconciling daily revenue for registers.

Additional Considerations:

  • Previous experience working in a retail environment, providing reliable customer support and maintaining a well-organized workspace.
  • Hands-on experience using point-of-sale systems, including Microsoft-based platforms.
  • Proven ability to count and manage cash accurately, perform daily register transactions, reconcile registers, and complete required cash-management documentation.

Special Instructions:

  • Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
  • Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
  • Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
  • Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.
