Ever wondered what early inhabitant's lives were like in the Highlands? Pick up a copy of the self-guided Cabin Creek Trail brochure at the Park Office or Visitor Center and discover how nature, human activity and time have shaped this pristine watershed. Walk the footsteps of the old mountain settlers, observe the unique forest and walk down into deep wooded gorge. Be stunned by breath taking waterfalls and hike out on 120 year railroad bed. This hike is moderate to difficult and is about 1.7 miles total, so bring proper footwear, water and a snack. Park at Massie Gap and enter the world of the Cabin Creek Gorge!
About Virginia State Parks History and Culture Day
On June 15, 1936, Virginia became the first state to open an entire park system of six parks on the same day. To celebrate this significant anniversary, Virginia State Parks hosts History and Culture Day every year on June 15, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the stories that make our parks special while enjoying the scenic beauty of its natural landscapes. From living history demonstrations to ranger-led kayaking tours and guided nature walks, History and Culture Day offers special programs for visitors of all ages.
