History often remembers naval warfare for its victories and innovations. This lecture looks instead at the moments when technology failed, plans unraveled, and lives were lost on the water.

Rather than focusing on a single event, this program examines several maritime catastrophes of the Civil War, including the Sultana, USS Cairo, USS Tecumseh, and other vessels lost to explosion, fire, or underwater mines. Through these incidents, visitors will explore the dangers of steam power, experimental weaponry, and wartime urgency. By the end of the presentation, the war at sea is revealed not only as a story of progress, but also one of risk, vulnerability, and human cost.

This program will be presented rain or shine. For questions about this program, please contact the Visitor Center at 804-561-7510 or email Shannah.Winchester@dcr.virginia.gov.
