Join us at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park for a unique look at one of the American Civil War's most unexpected stories. Hugo Mulertt immigrated from Saxony as a teenager and enlisted in the Union cavalry during the final months of the Civil War.
But his story does not end on the battlefield. After the war, Mulertt built a very different legacy as a pioneer in goldfish culture, authoring one of the earliest American works on the subject and helping popularize goldfish keeping in the United States.
This program explores the remarkable life of a man who bridged two worlds, from war to science, and invites visitors to consider the many paths a life can take after conflict.
