River Kayak Tour

Experience paddling on one of Virginia's most beautiful and historic waterways: the James River. Your guide will provide an overview of safety and paddling techniques, flora and fauna of the river ecosystem, as well as interpretation of historical features along the river dating back to the 1800's. Conditions permitting, the tour will cover five miles of tranquil river, starting at Launch A and ending at Maidens Landing.

What to Expect:
Due to the steep banks and mud from fluctuating water levels, the boat launches can be physically challenging for some participants to navigate while getting in and out of the boats, especially for those with limited mobility, strength, or balance issues. Stepping into the water and/or mud is often required. Please wear quick-drying clothes, closed-toe shoes with good grip, sun protection, and bring plenty of water (at least 32oz recommended). Be prepared to paddle for 2-3 hours in direct sun. If you'd like to use your own kayak, the fee is the same, but please let us know upon registration. Children must be at least 14 years old and accompanied by an adult. Dogs are not allowed.

Advance registration includes payment of the $20 per participant fee. To register, visit or call the Park Office at (804) 598-7148 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily. Registration closes 24 hours before the event. Space is limited to six participants. In the event of cancellation due to inclement weather, full refunds will be issued.
