Get ready to explore the outdoors during with this beginner-friendly hiking program. Whether you're brand new to hiking, looking for a refresher, or already an experienced hiker, you're likely to learn something new. We'll cover what to pack, what to wear, and how to stay safe around wildlife like bears and ticks. You’ll also learn how to read trail maps, understand trail signs and blazes, and review key safety tips every hiker should know.

After learning the basics, we'll head out together on a short, guided hike to put your new skills into practice. The hike will be just under a mile on uneven terrain with some elevation gain and will reward you with a great view of Douthat Lake—a beautiful spot to enjoy during Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend.

Every September, during Girl Scouts Love State Parks weekend, Virginia State Parks offers a variety of programs to connect Girl Scouts with nature while earning badges. From guided hikes and plant identification to campfire building and backpacking basics, this special weekend helps Girl Scouts learn outdoor skills, build confidence and become advocates for the environment.
