Where

Program Location: Legacy Wayside
Main Park Address: Bear Creek Lake State Park, 22 Bear Creek Lake Rd., Cumberland, VA 23040.

Lots of thing can turn a simple day hike into an emergency camp-out. Join us as we explore different ways we can prepare for the unexpected:

Shelter Making at 10 a.m. will be a group effort utilizing materials found on site to create emergency protection from the weather.

Fire Making at 11 a.m. will be a workshop on various ways to start and maintain a campfire while following safety guidelines. After the fire has been built, participants are welcome to use it to cook their lunch or some smores.

Way Making at 1 p.m. will be a workshop using map, compass and GPS technology to navigate through a wooded environment.

While registration is not required for this program, it is recommended! If you register, we will be able to contact you if the program is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. To register, please email bcguide@dcr.virginia.gov. Let us know if you have any questions and/or concerns.
