Snorkel the Bullpasture River

Location of Hayfields State Park in Virginia

Where

Program Location: River Loop Trailhead Parking Lot
Main Park Address: Hayfields State Park, 524 Hayfields Lane, McDowell, VA 24458.

When

Aug. 2, 2026. 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

So many creatures visit the Bullpasture River, but what critters are below the surface? With a snorkel and/or mask, swimmers can find a variety of aquatic life including snails, crayfish and other macro-invertebrates!

A ranger will be available to guide participants on how to use a snorkel and where to swim.

Snorkels and under-water viewing equipment will be provided. We do not have wetsuits or water shoes. Please wear clothes you are comfortable getting wet in. Closed-toe footwear that can get wet and a life jacket are recommended. All participants under 15 years old must be supervised by an adult at all times.

Rain stirs up the river bottom and makes viewing underwater difficult and increases river flow rates. If conditions are not safe the program will be cancelled. Please check the website for any changes.

Meet down the bank from the River Loop Trailhead Parking Lot.

Contact the park (540-396-4489) for more details.
