Young Naturalists- Shade, Shelter and Survival

Where do animals go when the summer sun is blazing? Join us as we become wildlife detectives and discover the clever ways plants, animals, and even people stay cool during the hottest days of summer. Along a short hike, young naturalists will search for shady hideaways, peek beneath logs and rocks, compare temperatures in the sun and shade, and learn why forests are nature's air conditioners.

Children will enjoy hands-on activities as they build miniature shelters for woodland animals using natural materials, investigate cool microhabitats with magnifying lenses, and play an interactive game to see how different animals survive the summer heat. We'll end by creating a simple nature craft to take home as a reminder that every creature needs a safe place to rest and escape the heat.

This program is designed for ages 3–8, but all curious young explorers are welcome. Parents or guardians must remain with their children throughout the program. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring plenty of water as we discover how shade, shelter, and smart survival strategies help life thrive at Sweet Run State Park.
