Slip on your closed-toe shoes and get ready to explore the creek! Join park staff as we search for secretive salamanders hiding beneath rocks and logs. In October, these cool, wet habitats become especially important—most salamanders are preparing for winter by slowing down their activity, finding moist shelter, and settling into the spaces that will keep them safe from freezing temperatures. During our search, you’ll discover how salamanders breathe through their skin, why they depend on clean water, and how seasonal changes influence their behavior.

We’ll also talk about the vital role salamanders play in forest and stream ecosystems, from controlling insect populations to helping scientists understand habitat health. Be prepared to get your feet wet during this hands-on autumn adventure.
