Join a ranger around the fire at Green Pastures Recreation Area, gathering inside the historic CCC-built picnic shelter for an evening of reflection, storytelling, and warm apple crisp.
As the cast-iron Dutch oven apple crisp cooks over the flames, we’ll explore the history of Green Pastures—originally built in the 1930s as a recreation area for African Americans during segregation. This space holds an important place in Virginia’s past, offering opportunities for community, outdoor recreation, and connection at a time when access to such places was unfairly limited.

Together, we’ll talk about how the park came to be, how it was used through the decades, and how its legacy continues to shape the way we care for and interpret the site today. Guests are invited to share their own stories and experiences around the fire as we reflect on the people who gathered here long before us.

Cost is $5 per person. Space is limited, so please sign up and pay by calling 540-862-8100.
