Young Naturalists- Who Moved in?

Location of Sweet Run State Park in Virginia

Where

Program Location: Interpretive Center
Main Park Address: Sweet Run State Park, 11661 Harpers Ferry Road, Hillsboro, VA 20132.

When

Oct. 28, 2026. 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

What happens when people leave a house, barn, field, or farm behind? Nature moves back in! Join us for a not-too-spooky adventure as we discover the animals that make their homes in old buildings, hollow trees, stone walls, brush piles, and other forgotten places.

Young naturalists will head out on a Spooky Trail Scavenger Hunt, searching for clues left behind by bats, spiders, owls, mice, snakes, insects, and other creatures. We’ll look for webs, holes, tracks, feathers, nests, chewed nuts, and other signs that tell us, “Something lives here!”

Along the way, we’ll discover how abandoned human spaces can become important wildlife shelters—and why some of the park’s creepiest creatures are actually helpful neighbors.

All ages are welcome; however, this program is geared toward kids ages 3-8. Parents must stay with their young naturalists.
