Birding Walk for October Big Day!

Where
Program Location: Trailhead/Equestrian Parking Lot
Main Park Address: Powhatan State Park, 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.
When
Oct. 10, 2026. 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Amidst fall migration on October Big Day people all over the world are encouraged to observe birds in 24 hours and submit their findings to The Cornell Lab's international database! On this guided walk, a ranger will lead you alongside golden meadow and autumn forest to observe and record findings in the Cornell Lab's eBird app. In the fall, it's possible to see rare migrants as they make their way further south for the winter. For some birds, Virginia is their winter destination, while others stay here year-round. Practice identifying the wide range of species by their appearance, song, behavior, and even environmental context.
The walk will be up to one mile at an easy pace on mostly flat terrain. Bring binoculars if you have them. If not, we do have a few pairs that can be borrowed. See attached file for a bird checklist to print at home. The trail can be muddy at times, so please dress accordingly.
