Nature Journaling: Botanical Inks

Where
Program Location: Shelter 1 (near playground)
Main Park Address: Powhatan State Park, 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.
When
Nov. 21, 2026. 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
You are invited to slow down, step outside, and discover how nature journaling can change the way you notice the world around you. This flexible practice of writing and drawing can improve focus, observation skills, memory, deepen curiosity, and help you connect to the natural world. Participants will be guided through easy, curiosity-driven activities that encourage looking closely, wondering freely, and recording observations in a journal. Master Naturalist and educator, Mary Larson, leads the monthly workshop, which features a new seasonal subject each month. Best for adults and teens.
November's Theme: Botanical Inks
Plants provide us with oxygen, food, and even beautiful colors for art-making! A park ranger will share how to make botanical inks and participants will have the opportunity to experiment with using them as watercolors. Join the "Meadow Walk & Seed Collection" program at 10 a.m. to learn about native plants that thrive in southeastern grassland habitat.
What To Bring:
The park will provide blank paperback sketchbooks and #2 pencils that you can take home, and colored pencils for use during the workshop. You are welcome to bring any of your own additional supplies! You may also want to bring a collapsible chair to sit on while recording your observations.
