Kick off the New Year with fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a little adventure at Sweet Run State Park! Whether you're an experienced hiker looking for a challenge or a family wanting to enjoy time outdoors together, we have a First Day Hike for you!

10:00 a.m. – Gordon Pond Adventure Hike (Approx. 5 Miles and 2.5 hours)

Start the year with a challenge! This hike is designed for hiking enthusiasts ready to explore the rugged beauty of Sweet Run State Park. The route to Gordon Pond features rough, rocky terrain and some moderately steep sections. Sturdy footwear and a good level of physical fitness are recommended. This hike is not suitable for strollers.

1:30 p.m. – Family-Friendly First Day Hike (Approx. 1 Mile and 1 hour)

Bring the whole family for a shorter, more leisurely adventure along Mountain View and Jonathan's Trail. Enjoy the winter landscape, discover the natural beauty of the park, and start a new year of outdoor exploration together!

Warm Up at the Interpretive Center!

Stop by the Interpretive Center between 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. for complimentary hot chocolate and coffee. It's a great place to warm up and explore the park's exhibits.

Extra Adventures for Kids and Canine Companions!

Dogs are welcome to join the fun and can earn their B.A.R.K. Ranger certification, while children can work toward their Junior Ranger certification.

Before You Hit the Trail: Bring plenty of water, wear sturdy hiking shoes, and dress appropriately for winter weather. Hike routes and distances may be modified based on trail and weather conditions.

About First Day Hikes

Every year on Jan. 1, Virginia State Parks celebrates First Day Hikes. This nationwide initiative invites people to ring in the new year by connecting with nature and making lasting memories at a state park. Ranger-led and self-guided First Day Hikes are offered across the state, giving visitors of all ages and skill levels the chance to explore outdoors. January 1 is a Free Parking Day at all Virginia State Parks. (The admission fee at Natural Bridge still applies).
