Sky Meadows State Park announces special spring break programs

DELAPLANE, Va. - Sky Meadows State Park invites families, students and outdoor enthusiasts to celebrate spring break at the 1,800-acre park with a full lineup of programs that highlight nature, history and hands-on learning. 

From beginner fishing workshops to ranger-led walking tours, Sky Meadows offers experiences for all ages and interests. Visitors can unplug, recharge and make new memories while exploring the park’s scenic trails, historic farmstead and natural habitats. 

Program schedule: 

April 1  

  • Call of the Creek, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.  
  • Furs, Skulls and Scales, 12-1 p.m.  
  • Fishing is Fun! Beginner Workshop, 2-4 p.m. 

April 2  

  • Feed Milling, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.  
  • Moo's Who? Cattle Talk, 1-2 p.m.  
  • Historic Ice Cream, 3-4 p.m. 

April 3  

  • Historic Grounds Walking Tour, 12-1 p.m.  
  • Critter Chow, 2- 3 p.m.  
  • Twilight Hike, 7-9 p.m.

April 4  

  • Spring Wild Edible Plants: Advanced Survival Training, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.  
  • Pacing and Orienteering, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.  
  • Feeding Time on the Farm, 1-2 p.m.  
  • Call of the Creek, 3-5 p.m. 

April 5  

  • Self-guided Junior Ranger Booklets, all day  
  • Children's Discovery Area: Play space open, all day  
  • Stories from the 1800's Wash House, 2-4 p.m. 

April 6  

  • Shearman's Mill Birding and Nature Hike, 10-11:30 a.m.  
  • Furs, Skulls and Scales, 12-1 p.m.  
  • Fishing is Fun! Beginner Workshop, 2-4 p.m. 

April 7  

  • Hearth Cooking Demonstration, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.  
  • Feed Milling, 1-2 p.m.  
  • Historic Grounds Walking Tour, 3-4 p.m. 

April 8  

  • Stories from the 1800's Wash House, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.  
  • Historic Ice Cream, 12-1 p.m.  
  • Moo's Who? Cattle Talk, 2-3 p.m.  

Regular park entrance fees apply, and some activities may require advance registration or an additional fee. For more information about the park’s spring break programs, please go to www.virginiastateparks.gov/skymeadows-events or call 540-592-3556. 

Visitors interested in attending multiple spring break programs are invited to reserve one of the park’s primitive tent-only campsites. Each campsite has a 16' x 16' tent pad, picnic table, bear-proof locker, lantern hook and fire pit with a small grate. To reach the campground, campers must hike 1 mile with their gear from the overnight parking lot.
