Grayson Highlands State Park announces new park manager

MOUTH OF WILSON, Va. – Grayson Highlands State Park is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Bender as its new park manager. Bender succeeds Mari Holland, who retired in early 2026.

Bender joins the state park system from Bath County, Virginia, where he served as county administrator since October 2022. Prior to his work in Bath County, he dedicated 28 years to the City of Richmond, holding a variety of leadership roles within the Richmond Police Department.

With a strong background in public service, community engagement and organizational leadership, Bender is eager to contribute to the continued success of Grayson Highlands State Park.

“I am honored to join this team,” said Bender. “Grayson Highlands State Park is truly one of Virginia’s treasures, and I look forward to working with staff, volunteers and the community to continue improving the visitor experience and preserving the natural beauty that makes this place so special.”

Virginia State Parks welcomes Bender and looks forward to the positive impact his leadership will bring.

“Mike brings extensive experience and a strong dedication to public service,” said Virginia State Parks District Manager Chris Fritze. “His collaborative approach and enthusiasm for outdoor recreation make him an excellent fit at Grayson Highlands State Park.”
