Douthat State Park expands educational opportunities for students and families

MILLBORO, Va. - Douthat State Park has expanded its educational opportunities, which are designed to support learning and connect students of all ages with the natural world. These offerings include on-site field trips, ranger visits to area schools and the popular Homeschool Naturalist Series.

Located in the Alleghany Highlands, Douthat State Park has long been a destination for outdoor recreation and environmental exploration. The park’s education programs aim to build on this legacy by providing hands-on, curriculum-aligned experiences that help students gain a better understanding of ecology, wildlife, conservation and Virginia’s natural landscapes.

Field trips at Douthat State Park

Teachers across the region can take their classes to the park for interactive, ranger-led educational field trips. Activities may include guided nature hikes, stream studies, wildlife observation and lessons on forest ecosystems. Programs are customizable, ensuring each visit meets specific grade-level Virginia Standards of Learning objectives.

Ranger visits to local schools

To help educators incorporate environmental learning directly into their classrooms and meet SOL requirements, Douthat State Park offers ranger visits to area schools. Park staff deliver engaging, age-appropriate presentations and hands-on activities that introduce students to topics such as local wildlife and environmental stewardship.

Homeschool Naturalist Series

The park’s popular Homeschool Naturalist Series is perfect for families and co-ops looking for enriching, nature-based instruction tailored for homeschool learners. Sessions are held in September, October, November, March, April and May and explore different themes, such as local wildlife and native trees. Programs are designed to accommodate multiple ages and learning styles.

“Douthat State Park is committed to helping young people build lifelong connections with nature,” said Chief Ranger of Visitor Experience Hannah Johnson. “Whether students visit the park, welcome a ranger into their classroom or participate in the Homeschool Naturalist Series, they gain valuable knowledge and experiences that support learning in meaningful ways.”
