RICE, Va. – In recognition of Veteran’s Day and in honor of all who have completed military service, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park will hold its 18th annual luminary commemoration on Saturday, Nov. 14.
Starting at 6 p.m., guests can gather on the Visitor Center's back patio for a stationary Luminary campfire presentation. Offering a comfortable alternative to the nighttime hike, the presentation is especially suitable for families with small children and those with mobility limitations. For guests wishing to explore the trail, guided walking tours depart at 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Visitors may also honor a veteran by sponsoring a personalized luminary displaying their name, rank, and branch of service. To participate, please email your veteran's information to sailorscreek@dcr.virginia.gov.
“Remembering the sacrifices made by veterans is central to the stories we share at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park,” explained Natural Resource Specialist Joshua Lindamood. “During this special evening program, rangers will escort visitors along a lighted route where historians will present interpretive vignettes depicting events from the Battle of Sailor’s Creek and its aftermath.”
Staff, volunteers and period-dressed public historians invite visitors to come out to the park for the 18th annual Veteran’s Day Luminary commemorative trail illumination. This solemn event honors all those who have served in the nation’s military, both past and present.
“Step into history on a path lit with reverence and remembrance for an unforgettable evening as we honor the courageous individuals who gave their all for a cause greater than themselves,” said Park Manager David Gunnells. “Walk the illuminated trail and hear gripping firsthand accounts from the men who fought here—raw, heartfelt stories that bring the past to life. This year’s luminary event promises a moving tribute we hope will inspire reflection and gratitude.”
The luminary program is free to the public and close-toed shoes are recommended as terrain will vary. For more information, call 804-561-7510.
