Clinch River State Park, located in Southwest Virginia along the Clinch River, offers diverse birding opportunities in a largely undeveloped, biologically rich setting. The park protects a scenic stretch of one of North America's most diverse river systems, making it ideal for spotting both resident and migratory species.

Type of birds

The Sugar Hill Unit shows a mixture of common and notable species, including Canada goose, mallard, pied-billed grebe, belted kingfisher, yellow-billed cuckoo, great blue heron, eastern Phoebe, American robin, song sparrow, yellow-throated warbler, northern cardinal, black vulture, turkey vulture, yellow-crowned night heron, bald eagle and red-tailed hawk. These sightings indicate the park supports a range of habitats, riparian zones, open water and upland edges, that attract varied bird communities.

Best time of year to observe

Spring and fall bring peak migration, making them ideal times to see a wide mix of waterfowl, songbirds and raptors moving through the area. In winter, Canada geese and other waterfowl are frequent sights, and river habitats may still host species like great blue herons. Summer offers active songbirds and warblers, with herons and kingfishers often found near the water's edge. No matter the season, cool mornings and evenings provide especially pleasant conditions for birdwatching.

Best places in the park to observe

The Sugar Hill Unit offers a great wide-open space for bird watching. Most of the park's trails are wooded, which provide great bird watching spots for different species of birds. The Riverside Trail, which is on the waterfront and would give you excellent vantage points for birding.

Special birding programs and events

The park offers Bird Identification Hikes throughout the summer as well as an educational kayak float that focuses on birds along the Clinch. Kayak floats run from April to August yearly.
