Off-trail biking safety at Virginia State Parks

Virginia State Parks offer a variety of biking experiences
Virginia State Parks are filled with scenic bike trails perfect for visitors of all ages and skill levels. Across the state, you can explore more than 55 miles of dedicated bike-only trails, about 140 miles of hiking and biking trails and roughly 260 miles of multi-use trails.
For overnight visitors, especially younger adventures, biking around paved campgrounds and cabin areas is another popular choice. While it may seem like a safe, casual spot to ride, these areas require even more awareness than open trails as they’re often some of the busiest locations in a park.
Cars, kids playing, people walking to bathhouses, pets on leashes and campers backing in or out all share the same space. Because of that, it’s important for riders to stay alert and adjust their speed and behavior.
Here are a few ways to help keep everyone safe when riding in a paved area:
Tips for riders
- Ride at a slower pace, especially around curves or near campsites with limited visibility.
- Be prepared for sudden stops.
- Make yourself visible with lights or bright clothing, even during daylight hours.
- Signal your presence with a friendly “on your left” when approaching walkers.
- Keep to the right side of the road and avoid weaving between campsites or parked vehicles.
- Stay aware of vehicles backing up. Many drivers have limited visibility around RVs, trucks, and gear.
Tips for drivers
- Drive slowly and expect bikes, walkers and children at all times in campground loops.
- Do a full walkaround before backing up to make sure the path is clear.
- Avoid distractions. Even brief glances away from the road can put others at risk in busy areas.
- Give cyclists plenty of space when passing and be patient on narrow roads.
- Use headlights, even during the day, to make yourself more visible to riders and pedestrians.
- Approach blind corners cautiously, especially near bathhouses, parking lots and play areas.

No matter a biker’s experience, there’s a trail suitable for them at Virginia State Parks
Exploring the trails is still one of the best ways to fully enjoy the natural beauty of Virginia State Parks by bike. Trail systems are designed with riders in mind and generally offer clearer paths, fewer distractions and more room to enjoy the ride.
But whether you’re on a wooded trail or cruising through a campground, riding with awareness ensures that all visitors have a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.
