Some of the CCC’s most enduring work can be seen in the hand-built stone ditches and gutters that line many of our roads and trails. These features were more than practical drainage solutions; they were intentionally crafted using local stone and traditional masonry techniques so they would blend naturally into the surrounding landscape.

By safely channeling water away from roads, paths and sensitive areas, these stone structures helped prevent erosion, washouts and flooding, making the parks more accessible to visitors.

Nearly nine decades later, many of these original stone ditches and gutters are still doing exactly what they were built to do. While modern updates have been added in places, the CCC’s craftsmanship remains a vital part of our park system, quietly protecting natural resources while preserving the historic character of the landscape.
