DESCRIPTION
As a floodplain manager, the post-disaster environment is definitely the most challenging.  In addition to juggling a seemingly endless number of responsibilities, the hours are long, the working conditions are tough and emotions are high.  Yet it is at this time that floodplain managers help set the stage for successful hazard mitigation and future community resilience. What are the key responsibilities of the local floodplain manager?  What actions need to be done first? What are the most important? What approaches are successful?

This webinar helps answer these critical questions.  The instructor, Maria Cox-Lamm, who is the state floodplain manager of South Carolina has just been through four years of back to back flooding, advising local floodplain managers as to their core responsibilities and tips for being successful post-disaster.  Whether you have been through a flood disaster and are looking for ways to improve your community’s response and recovery, or have never been through one but want to be prepared, this webinar will provide important guidance and tips that you can use.

Objectives:

  • Learn how to prioritize your responsibilities from well before a flood event all the way through the recovery process.
  • Gain a broad understanding of best practices when it comes to implementing post-disaster floodplain management programs.
  • Understand common pitfalls that can “sink” your local efforts.
  • Get information on how to plan for and execute a strategy for safely navigating your community through a flood by preparing before the flood.

Intended Audience: Local floodplain managers, local planning and zoning officials, code officials, resilience officers, and elected officials.

Presenter:

She has been with the agency since July 2004 and was the Associate Engineer in the SC Flood Mitigation Program from July 2004 - May 2010.
