DESCRIPTION
Are you unsure about how to effectively conduct a substantial damage assessment? Would you like some clarity about what "substantial damage" is technically defined as? What are your options for a structure that has been determined to be substantially damaged, anyway? These are just a few of the commonly asked questions about substantial damage assessments.
Assessing whether or not structures have been substantially damaged by flood waters is an important part of the job description for any floodplain manager. It's also imperative—and sometimes tricky—to get right. And the job gets much more complicated when there are hundreds or even thousands of assessments to conduct. This webinar will train attendees to navigate around common pitfalls in order to effectively and accurately conduct an assessment. Learning how to conduct these assessments (or brushing up on best practices) before the next flood event will ensure you and your community have all the tools you need to do substantial damage assessments.

Intended Audience: State and local floodplain managers, local planning and zoning officials, code officials, resilience officers, property managers, and elected officials.
Presenter:
Maria Cox Lamm, CFM, SC Department of Natural Resources—Flood Mitigation Program, is a Certified Floodplain Manager and serves as the State Coordinator of the Flood Mitigation Program in the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Land, Water and Conservation Division. She is responsible for the administration, coordination, and direction of all aspects of the South Carolina Flood Mitigation Program. The CAP-SSSE, CTP and FMA grants are administered through the Flood Mitigation Program. She has been with the agency since July 2004 and was the Associate Engineer in the SC Flood Mitigation Program from July 2004 - May 2010. She has over 20 years of experience in the field of floodplain management. Maria graduated from North Carolina State University in 1998, and prior to working with the Flood Mitigation Program in South Carolina, she was employed by Wake County (NC) Environmental Services in the Erosion, Flood and Stormwater Section.
